The One True Religion

Crutches are really useful devices, especially if you have a broken leg. You should store them in the cupboard under the stairs, or on that high shelf in the coat closet, for you never know when you might need them. Such is religion. 

"God is a concept by which we measure our pain", said John Lennon. The more pain we have, such as with a broken leg, the more we need our crutches. ​

If all you humans are in boats, then it's often useful to have 'river marshalls', going around, 'saving' people from falling out of their boats, or jumping into the water, or threatening to throw others out of their boats. There will always be those among you who need 'saving'. 

As Khalil Gibran's pastor said, "Satan, you must live, for if you die and the people know it, their fear of hell will vanish, and they will cease worshiping, for nothing would be sin. You must live, for in your life is the salvation of humanity, from vice and sin."

And so, you humans need crutches, river marshalls and Satan. ​

The word 'faith' has been for so long associated with religion, when it is much more than that. It is a belief, a conviction and a basic assumption, which is used in scientific reasoning with every argument.

And yet, many of you humans have difficulty separating your so-called faith from your actions, or your belief from your occupations. 

You who wear your morality only as your best garments would be better off naked. The hurricane and the hot sun will make no holes in your skin. 

You who define your conduct by so-called ethics, imprison your songbird in a golden cage. The freest song comes not through bars and wires. ​

You who consider worship to be like a window, either open or shut, has yet to visit the house of his soul where the windows are always open. 

Your every moment is your church, temple, mosque and religion. You're always meditating, if you would just wake up and realize it. 

In your dream state, you cannot rise above your accomplishments and hopes, nor fall lower than your defeats and despairs. 

Do not blindly follow the clergy, who claim to have the solutions to riddles and to the 'sacred secrets' of a so-called God. 

You are God, if you would just observe your Universe. You are the one who is playing and laughing with your children, singing with the songbirds, dancing among the stars and smiling with peace and thankfulness. 

The one true religion is gratitude. Nothing more.
