My patients often ask me for help with stress and anxiety. I'm only an internist and an emergency physician, not a psychiatrist, but here's what I say.
There are three EQUALLY EFFECTIVE ways to reduce and eradicate anxiety in your life:
1. You could do Cognitive Psychotherapy, also known as CPT. This is awesome, because a trained professional helps you collect and sort out your U Particles and UPWaves, in a way that you may never have done. It's effective, as it's like a personal trainer for your mind, but it requires a time commitment. You've got to schedule it, go find a parking spot and sometimes sit in a waiting room for longer than you'd like.
3. You could Meditate, for just 10 minutes a day. It's like working out in your own space, on your own schedule and whenever you can find, well, 10 minutes. It only costs you 10 minutes and, like doing push-ups or planks, it'll be really helpful if you do it for the rest of your life.
Whether it's your mind, your body or your spirit, you could get a 'trainer' or 'instructor'. You could take a chemical, or you could do it yourself, without any chemicals or trainers. It's your choice and whatever you choose is fine of course. Once you understand the Universal Model, you'll understand which way is perhaps the best.
2. You could take a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor, also known as an SSRI. Something like Prozac, basically. These work by altering the chemical balance in your neural architecture that would otherwise predispose you to feeling anxious. It's effective, but you'll have to keep on taking the pills, perhaps for the rest of your life, but it only takes a second to pop a pill. It's akin to those protein supplements that some athletes and body-builders take.
